Throughout the month of April, WRO and other housing advocacy organizations are celebrating national Fair Housing Month. This year, we celebrate 49 years since the enactment of the Fair Housing Act, the landmark legislation that made it illegal to discriminate against people on the basis of race, national origin, religion, color and sex. Amendments to the Act broadened the coverage to protect families with children under 18 and pregnant women and people with disabilities. State and local laws include coverage for age, military status, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, victims of domestic abuse, source of income, citizenship or alienage status. The aim of all these laws is the same: to provide an equal opportunity for all people to live where they choose as long as they can afford* the home.

The annual celebration of Fair Housing month is important to bring awareness to the problem of discrimination but fair housing is critical every month and every day. That’s why WRO works to protect the rights of all residents and prospective residents of our region to be free from discrimination. We educate, advocate and enforce fair housing laws by testing for discrimination. When necessary, we take legal action to ensure that people who may not be in a position to fight for themselves are protected.

There’s so much to do and too few resources to do all that is needed. Our fair housing department is primarily federally funded and faces an uncertain future. Your help is critical to enable us to continue our efforts to fight discrimination in all its forms. Your support will help us to continue educating the public, real estate agents and housing providers (landlords, property managers and developers); advocating for protection (such as co-op disclosure laws so prospective buyers don’t wait forever only to be turned down with no explanation); and enforcement when laws are violated.

If you share our belief that housing is more than just a roof over your head and that all people should be free to live in safe, decent housing free from discrimination, we encourage you to donate to WRO by clicking on the link below:
