Independent Living Program First-Time Homebuyer Counseling and Education Program |
WRO’s Independent Living Program assists clients who are psychiatrically disabled with housing issues. We do this by assisting clients with Section 8 vouchers locate decent, affordable housing, and by providing a housing subsidy and case management services to clients who have yet to obtain a Section 8 voucher. The following is a list of our programs and the services that they provide. 1. Independent Living ProgramThis program assists clients who have Section 8 vouchers in locating apartments. To qualify for this program the client must have a Section 8 voucher and be psychiatrically disabled. To apply, the client should speak to a counselor to schedule an appointment in the office. 2. Shelter Plus Care ProgramThis program provides a housing subsidy similar to Section 8. Clients in this program sublease apartments from WRO for 30% of their monthly income. WRO also provides case management for clients in this program. To qualify for this program, clients must be homeless and psychiatrically disabled. 3. Supported Housing ProgramThis program functions in the same manner as the Shelter Plus Care Program, with the exception that clients do not have to be homeless to qualify. 4. Single Room Occupancy ProgramThe SRO is an nine-room home with twenty-four hour staff. It has the same admission process and requirements as Supported Housing. Residents of the SRO have their own rooms, and share a kitchen and bathroom with three other clients of the same sex. The SRO is ideal for clients who are almost ready to live on their own but still benefit from having a staff member available to them at all times. Placement in WRO’s apartments or rooming house takes place through Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health’s Single Point of Entry admission process.
