First Time Homebuyer Programs

WRO's homeownership counseling can prepare you to buy a home.

WRO is the HUD-certified homebuying agency in the County. Counseling is offered to homebuyers at no charge regardless of income. Our trained and experienced counselors can review your household's financial situation and make recommendations to help you to prepare for homeownership. For example, you may need to work on paying down debts, address issues within your credit report and/or increase your savings. During a session with a counselor terms like down payment, closing cost, first mortgage, PITI, points, and walk you through of the home purchasing process is explained. You can also find out what price house, condominium, or co-op you can afford to purchase. Homeownership counseling will be conducted either in individual sessions, in a group, or both.

Workshops (Education) offered by WRO’s Homeownership program.

Learn about topics ranging from credit & budgeting, to learning who the key players in the homebuying process are. Learn how to identify and contact a real estate agent to help you find a house, which banks and mortgage products to consider and what type of assistance an engineer or a lawyer can provide. The workshops offered by WRO cover all areas of the homebuying process while providing you the opportunity to see samples of important documents and address your questions. WRO is the Fair Housing agency in the County and therefore all referrals provided by WRO are of professionals who practice fair housing, and in many instances have been trained by us. All interested participants for classes are REQUIRED to attend a 1:1 counseling session.

Post Purchase Education (Dates TBD)

Learn about topics ranging from how to cost effectively maintain your home, prevent from going into to default with your mortgage, and find reputable contractors when renovating. Learn about best practices when taking out a home equity line of credit and refinancing your home.
